Coffee stop on the way back to the hotel and I decided to test whether a krapfen with hot chocolate tasted better than it sounded. It fortunately did - doughnut filled with apricot jam.
We went our separate ways for the rest of the morning and I managed to find a bratwurst stand for lunch before we met again to go on a tour of the Palace. There were 9 of us in all and photography was verboten..... Stirling dressed for the occasion!
We had an English speaking guide for the tour and it was quite interesting to walk through two of the wings of the Palace and then through the old monastery parts to the crypt where the family members have been embalmed and encrypted for generations.
We caught a glimpse of the Princess driving to her residential section in her little Ferrari. Nothing out of the ordinary. The family is not real royalty but was elevated to nobility centuries ago when the founder invented the European postal system! They were then gifted lands and fortune when the system was nationalised.
More exploration of the town after our cultural adventure and Edna did a bit of shopping - and bought another schnecker for afternoon tea.
Detail from one of the valuable tapestries |
There are a couple of items of interest from a Jewish perspective including an installation at the site of the old synagogue and a plaque where Oscar Schindler lived for a short time after the war. We couldn't find an old Hebrew stone pictured in one of the guidebooks.
It was a relaxing day but I am now keeping my eye out for Jim... We ride out tomorrow for 4 days before the next hotel stop in Vienna so if you don't see any new blogs there has not been wifi.
