Orient Express Day 37 Balea Lac to Curtea de Arges - 87km

Francois is a very quiet sleeper.. and he enjoys his breakfasts.

The good thing about cycling is what goes up usually comes down so we had downhills to look forward to. After a good breakfast at the restaurant, we set off in convoy just after 8am through the tunnel and then downhill most of the way. I took the downhill slowly and enjoyed the very picturesque countryside.

Lunch was below "Dracula’s castle". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bran_Castle

With 1480 steps to climb, I declined and headed off to camp at Pensiunea Paradis which has a nice gravel and dirt hill climb which Merlin found doable but unridable by road bike.

The ride after lunch was very interesting with close ups of the haystack process and lots of churches including little worship places by the sides of the roads.

As most went up to Dracula, I was one of the first into camp. As they arrived complaining about the uphill approach Francois queried  the nomenclature as "Paradis" and I posed the question  "If this is Paradise I wonder what hell looks like.."

There was plenty of watermelon waiting at camp which was quite refreshing. Once I got the tent up, the rain started so we sat under the pergola until dinner. Miles served up risotto with sausages.

Today (11 July) is Edna’s 4th anniversary of kidney donation to her son and she shouted icecream for dessert. The owner of the camp provided home brew and there was plenty of beer and wine.

So, after dinner, Mieke orchestrated an impromptu concert with performances from those sufficiently inebriated to participate. There was singing and dancing a good time was had by all.
