Orient Express Day 8 Freiburg Rest Day - 0km

I had expected to sleep well in the comfy Hotel Stadt bed with mattress and doona but it was not a great night's rest. I had purchased a largish mango and a tub of creamy pineapple yoghurt at Aldi yesterday and enjoyed them for breakfast with some macadamia nuts, also from Aldi.

Andrea and Steven came to pick me up in their Mini and off we sped to Staufen where Andrea had researched we could visit a spectacular winery on top of a hill of vines. She programmed it into the GPS and we arrived at the winery which turned out to be a church!

We were not far from the spectacular hill but it turned out it was not a winery at all. Nevertheless, we left the car in Staufen and proceeded to climb to the top on the winding path around several varieties of vine. Great exercise for the legs on a day off riding... The descent was easier and we found our way to one of the many cafes in Staufen where we sat amongst cyclists, tourists and locals enjoying summer sunshine and an iced coffee. I enjoyed a bit of people watching as well..

After the refreshment break, we headed back to Freiburg to find the Old Synagogue Place. Much to my regret, but not surprise, there was no synagogue but merely a street sign confirming the synagogue had been destroyed in the Kristallnacht.

Dinner tonight at the Hotel Stadt – decided to pass on the knuckle of pork special – couldn't face the sauce...

Goodnight til next wifi spot...
