Our
cycling trip continues to Varadero (ca. 30 km), located at the Peninsula de
Hicacos. There you will find Cuba’s longest and beautiful white sandy beach
with crystal-clear waters, called Playa Azul. Accommodation at the all
inclusive Hotel Sol Sirena Coral. (all inclusive) - Trip Notes
The Group decided it
did not want to visit the historic part of Santa Clara but we did the 3
highlights:
Plaza de la Revolucion
Ernesto Guevara which includes the Che Mausoleum and Museum. LINK: Che_Guevara_Mausoleum.
Monumento a la Toma
del Tren Blindado which includes three carriages of Batista’s troop train
derailed and attacked by Che. LINK: Tren_Blindado
El Che de los Ninos
which is a statue showing Che holding a small child with details reflecting his
life incorporated into the statue. If you look closely, you'll see various little symbolic emblems, like the revolution troops on his belt buckle, the little Che on a motorbike (complete with spare tyre) riding up his shirt sleeve, and Che and his troops struggling through the Bolivian pampas on his trouser leg.
With the sightseeing
done we drove about 200km towards Varadero and around 1pm started cycling on a
mainly flat road through orange and banana plantations. We made a couple of
refreshment stops and, cycling done for the day, we bussed in to the all
inclusive Hotel Sol Sirena Coral.
