Orient Express Day 42 Ruse to Shumen - 118km

Bulgaria is a country full of surprises. Today we discovered the perfect wine for cyclists... and that there is not much to see between Ruse and Shumen other than endless fields of sunflowers and the heat rising from the asphalt.. It was a really oppressive day with many hill climbs, unrelenting sunshine and drinkstops few and far between.

We had a very interesting selection of drinks at the "lunch stop" today. I managed to keep both down and I had about 8 pieces of watermelon.. I stopped at the nearby petrol station for some peanuts and a cold Coke.

The sun beat down with more ferocity as the day unfolded and I stopped another 3 times for Coke and water and a bit of shade. It was a long tough day and I was happy to make it in to Shumen before 4pm. Why me??

This apparently reads Shumen - go figure!

News from today:

I omitted to mention that Alice's husband  Henry joined us in Bucharest as a "non rider".

Paul (aged in his mid 70's) found himself on the side of the road staring up at a policeman who took him off to the hospital . Apparently, Paul was feeling a bit woosy about 10km from the hotel and pulled over to the side before passing out. No damage but he will have a couple of days off.

Rudolph confessed to having a screw loose - he believes it is in his cleats...

Esther's birthday so we celebrated with a four course meal.

Cold cucumber & yoghurt soup
Salad

Vanilla & chocolate semifreddo
Stuffed chicken

I took a walk after dinner to check out the "tourist gateway to Bulgaria" (according to the hotel's website) and here are some of the highlights....
