Mexico Cross Over 2014 - Celestún | Saturday, Feb 15 - 20km

You will be cycling through the nature protection reserve of Celestún today. During this tour, you will be observing a variety of rare bird species, such as flamingos. In the afternoon, you will be relaxing on a lonely beach of this fishing village. Accommodation at the Hotel Manglares. - Trip Notes

We biked out in darkness at 5.30am to the bridge to watch the sunrise and the flocks of birds heading out for the morning. Mostly pelicans but a few other feathered friends.

As day broke, we cycled down to the fishermen’s parking lot and then through the marshes to find the pink flamingos.

After a bit of birdwatching, we backtracked into Celestun for an OJ at the market and then to the Hotel Mengeles (as it is now known) for a cold shower and an hour to kill before our 10am exclusively catered brunch in the hotel’s beachside restaurant. The flies were overjoyed as they had probably not seen food for a few days due to lack of guests.

The rest of the day is at leisure so, after posting this, it’s a rest day in the beautiful surrounds of the Hotel Manglares rather than the interior of the hotel itself.
