Mexico Cross Over 2014 - Celestún - Chichén Itzá | Sunday, Feb 16 - 60km

Today you will be transferred by bus to Chichén Itzá. This archaeological site was declared a world cultural heritage site by UNESCO. It is Yucatan’s most popular and visited pyramid. You will have enough time to explore all of the complex sites. At night you can enjoy the spectacular sound and light show. Accommodation at the Hotel Dolores Alba Chichén Itzá. - Trip Notes

Ignore the Trip Notes. Luis decided to swap and change today and tomorrow so we cycled the villages today and will tour Chichén Itzá tomorrow morning.

Some parting shots of Celestun from yesterday:

Burritas for dinner

Back to today! Unlike the Hotel California, we managed to check out of the Hotel Mengeles and drove for 2 and a bit hours to Libre Union where we mounted the bikes and headed off under the midday sun for a 60km ride, stopping for a break at Yaxcaba.

Then on to lunch at a Mayan family home/cafe in Kancabdzonot. Our host Ilario and his family made tortillas and served us chicken soup with Mayan Fried Chicken and pasta. Ilario then showed us around his estate and proudly displayed his pigs.

Onward to the ruins at Yaxhuna where there is evidence of the end of the sacbe (white road) which runs 100.6km from Coba, according to the archaeologists.

We made good time on the final 22km to Piste then put the bikes in the van and drove the last 5km to the Hotel Dolores Alba which is our base for tonight. Dinner in town where I tried the sopa de lima, my second chicken soup for the day but this time with tortilla strips, shredded chicken and lime. Tin tin ki!
