Orient Express Day 7 Munster to Freiburg - 74km

The night was less cold than previous ones but still not easy sleeping out in a tent.

On our last day in France, we decided to stop in Colmar for coffee and cake. The town was pretty much deserted at 8am on a Saturday but we managed to find a nice cafe in the main square and enjoyed window shopping in the vicinity.

Shop unfortunately closed..

Although still in France, most of the towns we passed through sounded German and we finally hit the German border on crossing the Rhine at 43km. Welcomen to Germany. Huge McDonalds right there on the border but we resisted and headed on towards Freiburg.

After missing a turn, I activated the GPS and we were directed on roughish roads through the fields which took us back to the route just as the battery died. We had made some rolls for lunch and took the opportunity to eat them when Edna made a pit stop. Neither of us eat processed meat which is quite fortunate as we found out later that two of the ladies had become quite ill in the early evening apparently from their lunch rolls...

In any event, to our surprise Edna and I were the first to reach the Hotel Stadt in Freiburg which is quite a large town. Our hotel is very near to the Human Genetic Research Institute. Some things obviously still fascinate the German doctors...

First priority was to find a laundrette and properly wash and dry clothes which had for the last 4 days been rinsed and hung out in wet camping grounds. Then a bit of shopping and a rest before heading out for dinner.

I had made arrangements to meet Andrea Jonson and Steven Evans who now live in Berlin and we had a very nice dinner in a restaurant in the MunsterPlatz. Four of the riders had found their way to the same restaurant so there was no escaping the Tour.
