Orient Express Day 19 Passau to Linz - 109km

The rain had stopped by the time we awoke but the tents were pretty wet. Edna’s leg was hurting so she, Stirling, the injured John and Alf & Evlyn decided to travel by boat to Linz and then bike in the 6km to camp.

The quip of the tour so far belongs to Francois. Each day, either Ricardo or Gergo cycles at the rear of the pack to ensure that everyone is accounted for. Today, Francois announced, Ricardo had hired a small boat to sail behind the river cruiser as sweep for them.

I cycled with Leana today - we are the only ones on mountain bikes - and we crossed paths through the day with other groups. It is a public holiday in  Austria so lots of people were out and about but all the shops shut. Chris, the triathlete amongst us, sauntered along to the Austrian border for some photos to prove there are others on the Tour and then he disappeared into the mist.

The day started off cool and overcast but the sun broke through around 11ish by which time Francois Michelle and Jacqui had crossed over from the north bank and we joined them for lunch at Aschach. I had my first apple strudel and a hazelnut gelato.

The boat was expected to arrive in Linz around 2pm so we kept an eye out. I spotted it around 10km from Linz so we stopped by the road shouting and waving. Eventually they spotted us and waved from inside their luxurious cruiser.

Leana and I continued riding to the dock in time to greet our weary friends and start the final leg to camp. Rain started just as we set off so they sheltered and I continued on to camp arriving just as the rain stopped enabling me to erect the tent. Just as well as it started pouring around 4pm and has not let up.

Dinner tonight was at the camp restaurant as shops were closed so Miles could not buy supplies. Turkey schnitzel for Edna and me and hazarai for the rest!
