Orient Express Day 13 Ulm to Eggelstetten - 107km

I awoke feeling 85% but could not eat much for breakfast. I decided to ride and play the day “by ear”.

Noah and Laura left us at Ulm and they are heading back to Paris. I suggested to Edna that we should stay with a group of riders just in case I had to stop part way and we rode out in a group of 8. Nothing much to report along the first stage but the obligatory coffee stop turned out to be quite a long one as the roadside vendor was prepared to bake fresh pretzels – that took about 30 minutes. At one stage we were stopped at a level crossing but no sign of a train for about 5 minutes.

Today’s route was a little complicated weaving back and forth through fields and towns and, at a point after lunch, we had to cross the Donau to head towards our camp site. We had some interesting stops in towns along the way and ended up following a different way than the route notes. At one point we rode towards two towers pouring smoke into the air and we pretended it was a nuclear plant. We also had a surprise visit to some Roman ruins sown a side street as we rode through a small town. "Veni, vidi, vici, urini...."

Second coffee stop for the day was at Gundelfingen, a very nice town. We also passed through Buttenwiessen where there is an information board about the Jews of the town (in German of course).

We reached camp after the others but in reasonably good time and managed to set things up without the usual rain.

I was feeling a bit better and enjoyed tonight's dinner of beef shashlick with tortellini and a little salad. Ice cream from the camp store served as a dessert treat. After dinner, I cleaned the bike and got the computer working. The wet weather does something to the battery I believe...
