Day two - Curtin Springs to Kata Tjuta and Uluru
This
morning we drive to the amazing site of Kata Tjuta. Feel the
spiritual significance of the place as we walk through the towering domes in
the Valley of the Winds and listen to your guide tell stories about the
land and show you some bush tucker along the way.
After the
hike we have lunch then head to the Uluru Kata Tjuta Cultural Centre where
you can learn more about the cultural significance of the region and listen to
tales from the 'Tjukurpa' dreamtime.
In the
evening, we watch the spectacular sunset over Uluru and enjoy a hearty dinner.
We spend tonight at our Uluru campground, fully equipped with toilets
and showers.
We woke up around 445am
to some soothing music from the bus, packed up the swags and had a “bush
breakfast”, dipping a cup into a pot of
hot water and then adding tea or coffee and making toast on a four sided burner
atop the gas cooker at the back of the trailer.
Then off we drove into the Reserve ghetting our first good look at Uluru before turning off to Kata
Tjuta (“The Olgas”) for a hot and sweaty hike with a few steep climbs and
descents which managed to disassemble the structure of my Nikes!
We then headed to our
campsite within the Uluru Tourist Accommodation area. It had its own powered
communal hut with water and a “Subway style” lunch was laid out.Next stop was the
Cultural Centre which has a café and decent toilets. From there for a quick walk around part of the Rock and then to the sunset
viewing spot where Tom made a pasta and a chicken stew for dinner.
Unfortunately, there was a fair bit of cloud cover so the sunset was muted as
was the colour of Uluru.
After the sun had set we
drove back to the campsite, rolled out the swags and went to sleep,
interrupted by an electrical storm at about 2am which lit up the skies, loud
thunder and even a bit of rain which sent us inside the cabin for the rest of
the night. I ended up sleeping on the table!
